42 St Connection Honored by Three Organizations
Awards Recognize MTA Delivering Projects Better, Faster, and Cheaper

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that MTA Construction & Development projects were honored for innovative design, accessibility improvements, system modernization, station beautification, and infrastructure maintenance. Together, these projects represent the Authority's ability to deliver mega projects such as Grand Central Madison and Third Track, as well as maintain the region's transportation network in a state of good repair by rehabilitating assets like the Rutgers Tube and the LIRR Cherry Valley Bridge. This core infrastructure work is critically important to the wellbeing of the transit system and represents more than 80% of the 2020 - 2024 Capital Plan. New York City Transit (NYCT), Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), Metro North, and MTA Bridges & Tunnels projects all received awards from multiple organizations in 2023.
“C&D has been delivering projects better, faster, and cheaper thanks to project management reform and innovative contracting tools like project bundling, and this hard work is not going unnoticed,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “I am proud of the many awards of recognition that our projects have garnered in 2023 and look forward to achieving even more in 2024.”
The Municipal Art Society recognized the MTA with a MASterworks Award celebrating Grand Central Madison and the 42 St Connection in the Best New Infrastructure category. Grand Central Madison was also honored as the Municipal Project of the Year by the Municipal Engineers of New York.
In order of award rank, the New York chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recognized nine MTA projects in 2023. In addition to the Diamond Award, the rehabilitation of the upper-level approach to the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge also received the prestigious National ACEC Crystal Award for Engineering Excellence. The New Jersey chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) also recognized New York Penn Station LIRR Concourse as its non-transportation project Grand Honor Award for 2023.

- The rehabilitation of the upper-level approach to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
- Design-build projects at the Hugh Carey and Queens Midtown tunnels
- Platinum Awards:
- The Harrison Place Substation Design-Build project
- National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Categorical Exclusions for the Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement
- Gold Awards:
- Work to mitigate flooding at the 148 St Yard
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades at the 42 St Shuttle as part of the 42 St Connection
- Electrical resiliency design-build work on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
- Replacement work at LIRR Huntington Station overpass
- Rehabilitation work on the Rutgers Tube
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded two MTA projects:
- The LIRR’s Cherry Valley Bridge Replacement received the 2023 ASCE Long Island Branch Project of the Year Award
- 42 Street Connection received the 2023 ASCE Metropolitan Construction Achievement Project of the Year Award
Engineering News Record (ENR) honored the MTA with its New York Regional Best Projects awards recognizing the extensive renovation work at the LIRR Concourse at Penn Station. Additionally, LIRR Elmont Station received an Award of Merit from ENR as well as the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the New York State Society of Professional Engineering.
Work to rehabilitate and replace tower elevators at the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge and the Long Island Rail Road Third Track Project were also honored with Excellence in Partnering awards by the Associated General Contractors of New York State.
