As part of the 42 St Connection Project, we're replacing elevators, escalators, and adding new stairs to make it easier to get in to, out of, and around Grand Central Station.
We're taking a phased approach to this work to minimize the impact on accessible travel.
We're also taking extra steps to help you navigate these changes. You may notice bright blue tape on the floor of the mezzanine and platforms. This is called "wayfinding tape," and it's intended to guide you to the elevators for the Uptown and Downtown trains and the new elevator near Lexington Avenue, which provides access between the street and the mezzanine. On the platform, the tape continues to guide you to the Accessible Boarding Area at the center of the platform.
Elevators
The modernized and reconstructed elevator that connects Grand Central Terminal and Grand Central Station opened on August 31, 2020.
Escalators
The completely new, modern escalators between the 42 St passageway and subway mezzanine in Grand Central Station opened on August 31, 2020.
Stairs
In Grand Central, we permanently closed the staircase between Tracks 3 and 4 that connects the Shuttle platform and the mezzanine near Madison Ave. In its place, we're building a single, wider stair that will provide 50% more capacity.
Alternate Travel Options
While we work, use the complementary staircase that goes to the same street exit, located between the Shuttle platform and the mezzanine between Tracks 1 and 3.
Train Service
The 42 St Shuttle will continue to operate most times while we work through 2022. For the most up-to-date planned service change information and alternative travel options, check our Planned Service Change page.
