Bringing CBTC to the 8 Av Line

We’re modernizing the signaling system on the 8 Av Line between 59 St-Columbus Circle in Manhattan and High Street in Brooklyn. For you, this means more reliable transit and fewer delays. Here are details about service changes and what you can expect to improve.

We’ve invested in the 8 Av Line Signal Modernization project—an initiative which will solve the ongoing delays caused by old signals along the line by fully replacing them with modern signaling. This will provide enhancements to service on the  lines when the Signal Modernization project is complete.

Here’s what you need to know about what we’re doing, how to use alternate service options as you commute, and the service improvements we expect when the project is done.

Benefits

More reliable transit

The installation of CBTC Signaling on the 8 Av line especially in the Central Business District (CBD) will increase the existing throughput versus the old signal system which is nearing 80 years old. Problems with the old signal system are a leading cause of service disruptions.

More resilient transit

Modern signals will make it possible for us to have more information about where trains are and how they’re performing. Installing modern signaling means that if there are problems with the new signals, we’ll be able to troubleshoot and resolve them faster.

Planned service changes

We are continuing the installation of the CBTC system through 2024, affecting weeknight and weekend service in one or both directions between 59 St-Columbus Circle and Jay St-MetroTech.  trains may run local or  trains may run express in either direction between 59 St-Columbus Circle and Canal St.  trains may run express in either direction between 42 St-Port Authority and Canal St.   trains may run via the  in either direction between W 4 St-Washington Sq and Jay St-MetroTech.

As alternatives for  stations, use nearby  or    stations.

When  trains are rerouted via the , use the  between W 4 St-Washington Sq and Chambers St (World Trade Center). Use the  for Fulton St via transfer at Delancey St-Essex St.

Car and pedestrian traffic may also be limited in some areas while we’re doing this work.
