Subway and rail service changes: Presidents Day Weekend 2024

There are service changes on the subway, LIRR, and Metro-North this weekend. Here's how that will affect how you get around.

If you believe that New York has 12 seasons, then this past week's warm-weather-to-snow shift put us somewhere between "fool's spring" and "second winter" (and eagerly awaiting actual spring). Regardless, we hope you have fun plans for this winter holiday weekend, whether you're staying in the city or getting out of town. 

Because it is a holiday, we have service changes on Monday, Presidents Day:

  • The subway and most buses are running on a Saturday schedule, with some Queens and Staten Island express buses running on a special holiday schedule.
  • The Long Island Rail Road is running on a weekend schedule.
  • On Metro-North Railroad:
    • The Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven lines are running on a Saturday schedule.
    • The Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines are running on a weekend schedule.

If you're traveling to JFK Airport this weekend, note that ​ trains aren't stopping at Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport. Consider taking the LIRR to Jamaica; subway riders will be accommodated at no extra cost. You can also take the ​​ to Howard Beach-JFK Airport or the ​​ to Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport. The AirTrain JFK stops at all three stations.

And a heads up for Brooklyn  riders: These service changes outlined below will be in effect for all of next week, with service between the affected stations resuming on Monday, February 26. Keep reading for more details. 

Here's what else is happening this weekend (also viewable as a handy map):

  •  trains aren't running between Dyckman St and 116 St-Columbia University.
  •  trains aren't running between Norwood-205 St and 161 St-Yankee Stadium.
  •  trains aren't running between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Kew Gardens-Union Tpke.
  •  trains aren't running between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.
  •  Shuttle train isn't running at all.
  •  trains aren't running between Hewes St and Broad St.
  •  trains aren't running between Myrtle Av and Delancey St-Essex St.
  •  trains aren't running between Brighton Beach and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.

Major subway service changes

 trains, Manhattan

From 11:15 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday,  trains aren't running between Dyckman St and 116 St-Columbia University in either direction, and downtown trains aren't stopping at 207 St. This is because of structural maintenance.

  • Free shuttle buses are running along three routes:
    • On Dyckman St between the  and  stations.
    • On St Nicholas Av between 191 St and 168 St, making all  stops.
    • On Broadway between 168 St and 116 St-Columbia University, making all  stops.
  • For service to/from 207 St, take an uptown train. Or, take the  at nearby Inwood-207 St. 
  • ​ trains are running in two sections:
    • Between 242 St-Van Cortlandt Park and Dyckman St, every 12 minutes during the day and evening.
    • Between 116 St-Columbia University and South Ferry, every 8 minutes during the day and evening.

​ trains, the Bronx

From 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, ​ trains aren't running between Norwood-205 St and 161 St-Yankee Stadium in either direction, and downtown trains aren't stopping at 155 St. This is because of structural maintenance.

  • The free D90 shuttle bus connects Norwood-205 St to Mosholu Pkwy ​​.
  • For service between Bedford Park Blvd and 161 St-Yankee Stadium, use nearby  stations.
    • Transfer between the ​​ and the ​​ at 161 St-Yankee Stadium.
  • For service to/from 155 St, take an uptown train.
  • ​​ trains are running between 161 St-Yankee Stadium and Coney Island-Stillwell Av.

 trains, Queens

​ trains aren't running between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Kew Gardens-Union Tpke in either direction from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday because of signal modernization work.

  • Free shuttle buses are running between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Kew Gardens-Union Tpke, making all ​ stops.
  • The LIRR will accommodate subway riders between Queens and Manhattan for no additional cost at Jamaica, Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Woodside, Grand Central, and Penn Station.
    • If you're heading to JFK Airport, consider taking the LIRR. You can also take the ​​ to Howard Beach-JFK Airport or the ​​ to Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK Airport.
  •  trains are running between World Trade Center and Kew Gardens-Union Tpke and on the  to Jamaica-179 St.

 trains, Brooklyn

From 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, February 26,  trains aren't running between Kings Hwy and Coney Island-Stillwell Av and  trains aren't running between Brighton Beach and Coney Island-Stillwell Av in either direction. This is because of signal modernization and track replacement work.

  • Free shuttle buses are running on two routes:
    • Between Kings Hwy  and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, making all  stops.
    • Between Brighton Beach and Coney Island-Stillwell Av, making all  stops.
  • For direct service between Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn and Coney Island, take ​​​ trains.
  •  trains are running between Jamaica-179 St and Kings Hwy.
  •  trains are running between 96 St and Brighton Beach.
  • Note:  trains also aren't running between Kings Hwy and Brighton Beach during the day and evening from Tuesday, February 21 to Friday, February 24. 
    • For service to/from Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach, take the 

 Shuttle, Manhattan and Queens

The  Shuttle train isn't running between 21 St-Queensbridge and Lexington Av/63 St in either direction from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday because of track replacement work.

  • Free shuttle buses are running between Queens Plaza and Roosevelt Island, stopping at Queensboro Plaza and 21 St-Queensbridge.
    • Take these shuttle buses for service to/from 21 St-Queensbridge and Roosevelt Island.
    • Note: Q94 and Q95 shuttle buses aren't running.
  • For service to/from Lexington Av/63 St, take the . Or, use nearby Lexington Av/59 St  during the day and evening. 

 trains, Brooklyn and Manhattan

trains aren't running between Hewes St and Broad St in either direction from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday because of track replacement work.

  • Free shuttle buses are running between Hewes St and Delancey St-Essex St, stopping at Marcy Av.
    • When exiting the subway at Hewes St or Delancey St-Essex St, get a GO Ticket from a station agent to re-enter.
  • For service between Brooklyn and Manhattan, take  trains.
  • For service to Lower Manhattan, take  trains.
  •  trains are running between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Hewes St.

 trains aren't running between Myrtle Av and Delancey St-Essex St in either direction from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 6:30 a.m. Tuesday because of track replacement work.

  • For service between Myrtle Av and Hewes St, take the .
  • For service between Hewes St and Delancey St-Essex St, take free shuttle buses.
  •  trains are running between Middle Village-Metropolitan Av and Myrtle Av.

Other subway service changes

 trains, Brooklyn

Manhattan-bound  and local  trains are running on the express track from Crown Heights-Utica Av to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday because of station improvement work.

  • For service to/from Kingston Av and Nostrand Av, take a New Lots Av-bound train.
  • For service to/from Eastern Pwky-Brooklyn Museum, Grand Army Plaza, and Bergen St, take the .

 trains, Brooklyn and Manhattan

Uptown  and local  trains are running on the express track from Canal St to 59 St-Columbus Circle and uptown  trains are running on the express track from Canal St to 42 St/Port Authority Bus Terminal. This is because of structural improvement work.

  •  changes are in effect from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
  •  changes are in effect from 9:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
  • For service to/from Spring St and 23 St, take a downtown train.
  • For service to/from 50 St, take the .

Euclid Av-bound ​ and Ozone Park/Far Rocakway-bound local ​ trains are running on the express track from Utica Av to Broadway Junction from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. This is beause of station improvement work.

  • For service to/from bypassed stations, take a Manhattan-bound train.

 trains, Brooklyn

Manhattan-bound  trains are skipping Morgan Av from 11:45 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday because of station improvement work.

  • For service to/from this station, take a Canarsie-bound train.

 trains, Manhattan

Downtown  and local  trains are running on the express track from 57 St-7 Av to Canal St from 11:45 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday because of structural maintenance.

  • For service to/from bypassed stations, take an uptown train.
  • During the day and evening,  trains are running every 10 minutes while  trains share tracks in Manhattan.

Long Island Rail Road service changes

Far Rockaway Branch

Far Rockaway Branch trains are running to Grand Central from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday because of track switch replacement work.

  • For service to/from Penn Station, transfer at Jamaica.
