MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) serves more than 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it carried more traffic than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation—more than 329 million vehicles. Surplus revenues from B&T’s tolls help support MTA public transit services.
B&T’s seven bridges are the Robert F. Kennedy, Throgs Neck, Verrazzano-Narrows, Bronx-Whitestone, Henry Hudson, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial, and Cross Bay Veterans Memorial bridges. Its two tunnels are the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and the Queens Midtown Tunnel. All B&T crossings are within New York City.
All B&T crossings operate with cashless, electronic tolling (Cashless Tolling) systems only. Customers pay with E-ZPass® or receive a toll bill by mail under the Tolls by Mail program. Cash is not accepted at B&T facilities. Cashless Tolling enables B&T facilities to process traffic flows more safely and efficiently. By reducing idling time, cashless tolling also reduces carbon emissions and fuel consumption. In 2019, more than 95 percent of B&T’s toll transactions were paid by customers using E-ZPass.
MTA B&T is a co-founder of the E-ZPass Interagency Group, which has implemented integrated toll collection in 17 states: New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia. A single E-ZPass account can be used to pay tolls for any of the member agencies of this group.
